What I Watched in January '14

I've been a bit late getting around to doing my January recap, but here it is.

30 films in total.
7 of these films were re-watches.
received a 5-star rating.
2 received a 1-star rating.

2 were short films.
1 was foreign language.

Best Film of the month: Short Term 12
Worst Film of the month: Godzilla
Most Disappointing: American Hustle

Best part of a terrible film: The anticipation it built for this years remake (Godzilla)
Worst part of a great film: The heavy-handed moments of emotional blackmail (Fruitvale Station)

Let me know if you've watched any of these films, what you thought of them and be sure to suggest films for me to watch through February.

You can find my Letterboxd account here.

  1. Emotional blackmail is the perfect way to describe Fruitvale Station. I said the same thing with different wording in my December ratings of the month post. I couldn't get over it.
I was surprised by The Huger Games, too. It was really entertaining.
Is this your first time watching The Godfather? Do you enjoy it? I watched it for the first time last year. I was so bored. I know everyone loves it, but I just couldn't get in to it. I was looking forward to watching the series, but forget about it.
If you haven't seen Who Are You, Polly Maggoo? you should give it a watch. It's one of my all time favorites!

    1. It's a shame that Fruitvale felt the need to resort to such methods to get a guaranteed response from the viewer because I thought that it was a really strong film aside from those moments.
It was my first time watching The Godfather, and I really did enjoy it. It's a shame that you didn't like it, I just loved finally seeing all of those famous moments that have made cinematic history in their actual context. I know a lot of people think that the second is the best of the trilogy so maybe don't give up on it just yet? It's the third that I've been told to avoid!

I'll definitely track that one down. I'd never heard of it but it looks interesting, thanks for the suggestion!
